A Transformative Workshop

Transformative AI, or TAI, enables machines to do virtually all of the tasks humans currently do.

This closed-door workshop will tackle the question: “If we knew with certainty that Transformative AI would occur within ten years, then what should economists and economic policymakers do today to prepare?”

We’ll refrain from engaging in debate regarding when we might actually achieve TAI, or who will win the race to build TAI, or whether we should pursue TAI at all. There are many other forums for debating these interesting and important questions. For our purposes, we assume that we know today with certainty that we will achieve success in building TAI by 2034, and so we are focused on what economists and economic policymakers should begin doing today to prepare for that world.

In addition to economists and economic policymakers, we’ll convene other AI researchers, social scientists, ethicists, philosophers, and thought leaders to develop a thoughtful, robust, and nuanced response to this question. While the primary output will be new research ideas, we also plan to produce a white paper summarizing our discussions.

This workshop is off-the-record.
